Check out alumnae Millie Veasey at the Raleigh museum
The City of Raleigh Museum’s has opened an exhibit to honor veterans of WW II and other wars titled “Our War: Voices of Raleigh’s World War 2 Veterans.” Alumnae Millie D. Veasey is featured in the exhibit. Veasey served in the Women’s Army Corps from 1942-1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. She was a past president for the NAACP of Wake County. Millie Veasey is 1953 graduate and retired from the university as the director of Career Planning and Placement /Cooperative Education.
The “Our War” exhibit tells how black and white Raleigh residents who went to war experienced two different Raleighs, and had vastly different experiences in the same conflict. The exhibit is the culmination of an oral history project that documented the experiences of 15 local veterans, whose interviews give a revealing look at growing up in Raleigh in the 1930s and ’40s. It also confronts the reality of leaving their hometown, participating in WW II and then returning to Raleigh.
The City of Raleigh Museum is located at 220 Fayetteville St, Raleigh. On June 10, Veasey was honored by the Raleigh/Wake Retired Alumni Chapter for being an alumnus over the age of 90.
