Leadership academy to transform young males
The George Williams Leadership Academy, sponsored by Duke Energy, is an opportunity for young men ages 15 to 17 to gain confidence and leadership skills in a collegiate environment. Along with their Saint Augustine’s University mentors, George Williams Leadership Academy participants will engage in cultural excursions, workshops, seminars and off-campus activities designed to mold young leaders.
The academy is named after legendary head track and field coach, George “Pup” Williams, athletic director at Saint Augustine’s University. Williams has built a dynasty in track and field and cross country at Saint Augustine’s University. Since he began coaching in 1976, his track and field programs have won an astounding 35 national championships including the 2014 and 2013 NCAA Division II Men’s Indoor Championships and the 2014 and 2013 NCAA Division II Men’s Outdoor Championship.
Williams’ leadership style and winning attitude makes him the perfect namesake for this camp.
“It’s no secret that I like to win,” said Coach George Williams, athletic director and head track and field coach at Saint Augustine’s University. “Instilling leadership skills in young men that will help them win on and off the field has always been a passion of mine.” The three-week residential program will begin July 7 with opportunities for participants to engage in university activities throughout the academic year. At the conclusion of the summer program, participants will gain an honest assessment of their leadership skills, understand the meaning of servant leadership and learn strategies for being successful inside and outside the classroom.
“Community leadership is one of the areas of focus of the Duke Energy Foundation,” said Rodney Gaddy, chairman of the University Board of Trustees and vice president of Administration for Duke Energy. “The opportunity for young men to learn and hone their leadership skills based on the leadership style of George “Pup” Williams is one that we are proud to be associated with.”
The successful applicant will be a male between the ages of 15 to 17 (must be 15 by January 1st), have a 2.5 grade point average or above, provide one letter of recommendation (teacher, minister, church layperson, organizational leader) and provide responses to three essay questions.
