Falcon Pride showcased during the CIAA
Falcon Pride was seen throughout the City of Charlotte during the 2014 CIAA Basketball Tournament in Charlotte, NC. The Falcons were honored for their hard work on and off the court and President Dianne Boardley Suber hosted a brunch that was attended by alumni, corporations and friends of the university.
The Lady Falcons basketball team received an award for their performance in the classroom on Monday, February 24. They won the CIAA Highest Team Grade Point Average Award for women’s basketball during the CIAA Basketball Tournament Tip-Off Luncheon at the Charlotte Convention Center. This is the fifth consecutive league Highest GPA Award for the Lady Falcons including four straight years under St. Aug Head Coach Rachel Bullard, who is in her fourth season.
Three players on the Falcons basketball team were also honored at the luncheon. Junior guard Amere May from South Haven, MI majoring in mass communication and senior center Jonathan Crawley from Richmond, Va. majoring in liberal studies received awards for being named to the All-CIAA Men’s Basketball Team. Freshman guard Anthony Gaskins from Greenville, NC majoring in physical education picked up an honor for making the All-CIAA Men’s Basketball Rookie Team.
Ashley Ross and Christian Roberson of the Blue Chips Cheerleading Squad were named to the All-CIAA Cheerleading Team, which was recognized on Super Saturday during CIAA Basketball Tournament on Saturday, March 1, 2014. Ross is a senior from Charlotte, N.C. Roberson is a sophomore from Richmond, Va. They were two of 24 cheerleaders selected to the All-CIAA squad.
During the tournament, Lady Falcon Victoria Davis, a senior from San Diego, Calif., won the Food Lion MVP award in Saint Augustine’s University’s opening game victory over Elizabeth City State University. Falcon Amere May received the Food Lion MVP award for the game against Chowan University. May finished with that game with 37 points. Tashaun Stockdale, a junior from Poplar, SC majoring in business with a concentration in real estate, also received the Food Lion MVP award after the victory game against Shaw University.
The university’s illustrious alumni were also honored during the week of tournament activities. Alumnus Anthony Boggan and Lawrence Coleman were inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame during the John B. McClendon, Jr. CIAA Hall of Fame Breakfast event at the Charlotte Convention Center on Friday, February 28.
Boggan was an outstanding basketball player at then Saint Augustine’s College from 1977 to 1981. A Brooklyn, N.Y. native, he led the Falcons to the 1980 NAIA District 26 Championship and the 1980 NAIA National Tournament. A two-time All-CIAA selection, Boggan was named the 1979-1980 NAIA District 26 Tournament MVP and 1980-1981 Co-CIAA Player of the Year. He is a 1982 St. Aug graduate.
Coleman, a Fort Valley, Ga. native, was a highly successful head men’s golf coach at St. Aug for nearly 37 years. The Falcons won five PGA National Minority Golf Championships in the early 1990’s which earned them trips to the White House to visit the President of the United States. They also captured six CIAA men’s golf titles which led to Coleman winning several CIAA Coach of the Year awards in golf.
A 1971 St. Aug graduate, Coleman was a key figure in starting the PGA National Minority Golf Championships. In 2002, he was inducted into the National Black Golf Hall of Fame. Coleman retired as St. Aug golf coach in 2009.
