Marilyn Foote-Hudson, executive director of the NC GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Foundation announced GSK contribution of $10,000 toward an endowment for Saint Augustine’s University for participating in the Women In Science Scholars Program.

On March 27, GSK hosted its biannual Women In Science Scholars Program at the Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC. The theme was The Intersection of Art and Science. GSK mentors, student scholars and faculty representatives had the opportunity to network and learn how science has been incorporated into the arts for centuries. Additionally, participants were able to tour NC Museum of Art and witness the science first hand.

Dr. Doreen Cunningham, assistant dean and chair of the Department of Biological and Physical Sciences, served as the GSK Women in Science faculty representative. She attended the event with biology majors Colleen Bramwell Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies) and De’Asia Lewis (Carrollton, Ga.), who are the GSK Women in Science Scholars in the School of Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering.

Honoring our women

During the last week of March, the University hosted a weeklong of various events and activities in honor of Women’s History Month. The theme for the week was Weaving HERstory: Weaving the Stories of Women’s Lives. Some of the special events included a Women’s History Month Lecture featuring guest speaker Dr. Genna Rae McNeil, professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. On March 26, the University hosted its Lyceum program featuring Mrs. Monika Johnson-Hostler, executive director for the N.C. Coalition Against Sexual Assault and a Wake County Board of Education Member, as the guest speaker.

The week of celebration end with a conference on March 28, which the University hosted with the The Links, Incorporated Triangle Park Chapter in the Martin Luther King Jr. Conference Center. The highlight of the conference was a panel discussion, Women Living Holistic Lives: Weaving Professional Careers, Artistic Expression & Service. Guest panelists included Dr. Renée Alexander Craft, assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Cheri Phillip, psychologist, entrepreneur and research director for Robeson Group, LLC, and Attorney Karen Bethea-Shields, former judge for the 14th District of North Carolina.
